As a Paladin player, which Paladin talents should you make sure to get? What can you pass on? Which talent tree is the best for what you are trying to do? As we all know that the Paladin is infamous amongst other classes for their survivability. Even untalented, simply wearing plate and having the capacity to heal yourself is not a pair of skills to be taken lightly. The Paladin can primarily fill two roles, healing and tanking, when properly talented, either paladin role can be filled with great success.
For the most part, the primary focus of the Holy tree is healing, and that's exactly what this build sets out to do. Picking up all the good healing and mana conservation talents on the way down the tree, skipping a few that either have purposes not suited to your cause, or not particularly useful or worth their points (Aura Mastery, Blessed Life). The leftover points find a home going a bit into Protection, where you get a couple talents, mostly filler, to pick up Blessing of Kings and Improved Concentration Aura, which combined with Spiritual Focus, makes the paladin healing abilities unable to be impacted by pushback.
As above, the Holy tree focuses largely on healing, but there's also a bit of firepower as well. If you decide to make a heavy investment in Holy, you're role in groups will likely be that of a healer. The last branch of the tree - Divine Illumination - isn't a great final talent unless you are going to dedicate yourself solely to healing. Holy Guidance is a pretty nice talent however that requires 35 points in Holy before you can invest in it and 5 points would be very nice if you are going this far in the Holy tree. Illumination is also very nice and works superbly with Divine Favor, Holy Power, and Sanctified Light.
If you make a plan to be a tanking Paladin, the Protection tree is great as it's all about helping you survive. Probably you won't want to invest too heavily into Protection if you are going to want to PvP a lot. Avenger's Shield rectifies one of the weaknesses of the Paladin with your 41st point in Protection by giving you a ranged attack and it is one of the most helpful PvP weapons for a Protection Paladin since it can stun a number of enemies. Redoubt is an outstanding first tier talent. Blessing of Kings is a must if you're going to be in Protection for at least 11 points. Blessing of Sanctuary is nice if you are main tank.
The Paladin is the best in the game at tanking multiple mobs, and with so many talents reflecting damage back every time the Paladin is attacked, it's easy to see why that's the case. But otherwise, everything else is very useful for getting and holding on to threat. A couple points in Retribution and the first five in Holy help with mana management. Feel free to move some points around to get anticipation if you are having problems with +defense items. You can also max out hammer of justice instead of precision if you rely on that to save party members.
When it comes to the Retribution tree, it will increase your DPS and if you plan to invest much time in PvP, you will probably also want to invest a lot of points in this tree. Crusader might be the best 41st point in any of the Paladin trees. Improved Judgment is a nice talent you can get early. Conviction is a sweet talent that requires you to take all five ranks. It's too good to pass up. Vengeance and Fanaticism will help a lot with your DPS. Repentance is awesome crowd control if you're going to go this deep in Retribution.
